The economics of the adult-entertainment industry: market scale and why estimates vary wildly, the value chain from production to platform to payment, and where the profit concentrates.

A big, badly-measured industry

• Scale is real but slippery: credible estimates put the global adult industry in the tens of billions of dollars annually — but figures vary enormously because much of it is private, fragmented and incentivised to stay opaque. Treat any single “the porn industry is worth $X” number with deep suspicion; the honest answer is “large, and hard to measure”;
• Why measurement fails: private companies, offshore structures, cash and crypto flows, and definitional questions (does it include cam, dating, mainstream platforms' adult content?) make clean totals impossible.

The value chain

• Production — from traditional studios to the now-dominant independent creators;
• Distribution/platforms — the tube sites, subscription platforms and cam sites that aggregate audience and, increasingly, capture the value (the platform shift);
• Payments & infrastructure — processors, hosts and CDNs that take a cut and hold real power (the payments chokepoint);
• Ancillary — marketing, affiliate networks, tech vendors, and the adjacent economies (novelties, live events).

Where profit concentrates

• Platforms and payment gatekeepers have historically captured disproportionate value — the classic pattern of aggregators beating producers;
• The creator-direct era shifted some economics back toward individual performers, while creating new platform giants (how);
• Piracy is the structural drag suppressing content prices across the board (the free problem);
• The through-line: whoever controls audience and payments controls the money — production is the least defensible link. That dynamic drives everything else the Observer covers.
